Covet

The shoes do not make the man, the car doesn’t make the man, and your house does not define you. People of the world say those things, but they are not true. They think like that because they don’t believe God. So they Covet. God makes the man! It is true that you should make an effort to look and be your best. God wants us to pursue excellence – in everything. But if you are Led by what you see – you are an Unbeliever. If you’ve gotta have the big house or the new car before you give God the Glory, then you are Discontent. Just because someone has a lot of stuff doesn’t mean they have an important life.

So many people have lived their lives in pursuit of something they thought they had to have, that they couldn’t even taste the good life they were already living. They ran so fast to get where they were going, they missed all the lovely and amazing that was right in front of them. God put it there to be enjoyed. When we covet, we sin with ourself and we sin inside ourself. So that in one sense, nobody else can see it, because it is in our inner man. Covetousness is the greedy desire to Get. Anything. The question should never be about what I want. Instead, we should ask ourselves  ‘if I am truly in Christ, can I rejoice right here. Can I be thankful to God no matter where I’m at, no matter what’s going on in my life, regardless of circumstances.’ That’s the real test, and it’s a life long one.

The difficulties don’t begin when your ship comes in. You have to pass a lot of tests just to get your ship to come in. It starts right here, right now. Right where you’re at. A refusal to pass the test or to even take it isn’t actually an option – it’s just the terrorist of your fallen nature showing. It insists that I get my way before I praise God. As though I can blackmail the Creator of the universe by being self centered and unthankful – until I get mine. It is the way of all flesh, but it doesn’t have to be your way. You don’t have to be carnally minded. You can keep your mind on spiritual things. Things like contentment.

Contentment is something more than just putting up with where you’re at, or refusing to complain about what you have. Contentment means I know my Redeemer lives! He is my Provider, and He will take care of me, and until everything He has for me shows up – these things [right here] don’t move me. You and I will have to hold fast to this position all of our life. My desires do not define me – His Word does. All of my circumstances good or bad, are not in any way sufficient for me. He is my Sufficiency! He is the over and above, more than enough God. Not just for the future, for right now.

The right now is where we get to practice believing that. Instead of believing what we see or feel, because we need a lot of practice. Here is the very place of my death to Self, and the birth of my becoming a Son. Dead to Self – alive to Christ, remember. A true Son is content, not with where he’s at – but in who the Father is. Part of God’s provision through what Christ did on the Cross is contentment, and it is for us right now. Godliness with contentment is great gain. If you can’t be content right now before you get the big house and nice car, you won’t be content after. Jesus said a man’s life does not consist of the things he possesses.

Money is a form of Power, but it’s the lowest form of power in the earth. It is not important to God – He owns all the silver and the gold. But He knows it’s important to us. In a sense it is just a symbol, but it’s got our energy and effort, our blood sweat and tears wrapped up in it. Which is what makes it precious to us, and therefore makes it precious to God. If you desire something it’s because you Value it. You have a level of respect and reverence for anything you desire. Because desire is related to worship. It is in fact worship on a lower level. God is the one who gave us desires and He wants us to have them. If we take our proper place as sons – our deepest desire will be for Him.

This highest reverence we possess is the thing we’re supposed to have for God, the thing we’re supposed to give Him. Left to ourselves we don’t give it to Him. Because even though it is in us – it’s not in us for Him. That heart posture came with the Fall, and like all other corruption – must be changed into the Image of His dear Son. Covetousness is that greedy desire to get, which is what we do have instead of a strong desire for Him. You just may not recognize it until you’re in the middle of it, or it’s in the middle of you. Anything you desire intensely is something you Covet.

The Bible does not say not to covet absolutely, it says not to covet certain things. It actually tells us to Covet the Lord and His Things. What we have to realize is that we covet.  All that remains is to shift our Covetousness from the world of men to the things of God. It will take a lifetime. The greater the reverence we have for the Holy Spirit, the more we desire Him, the more He will show up in our meetings and in our lives. Ask the Lord to help you reverence Him, to want Him more than you do already. Make it your Prayer that He causes your strongest desires, your deepest longing . . . to all be for Him.

There is a strong similarity in praying to a statue and caring more about money and stuff than you do about God. The Bible calls it Idolatry. Covetousness is Idolatry.  That means you have something in the place that only God should have. What so many fail to realize is that everything down here is like a gallon of milk – it has an expiration date on it. It’s only good for a little while to do something with. If you don’t do something with it in the short time you have it, it won’t matter. Your having had it will have meant nothing. Don’t stockpile things or money – put them to use. Use them to get people for the Kingdom. How much you had of anything won’t even be known in the next life. What you did with it will be known, by everybody. And it will be known forever. Don’t just be rich in this world – be rich in God.

This is not the only life we are going to have. We must get over the lie that if I don’t find satisfaction in this life, if I don’t make myself happy – I will never be fulfilled. I won’t get another chance, so I have to do it now. It’s a Lie. Did you notice the Bible doesn’t spend a lot of time or space talking about our happiness, or our being happy. You can obey the Bible and be happy. Although obedience is much more important than happiness, especially for the life to come. As it is the very thing required on our part, to make it to the next life. Which is the only Life . . that matters.

Christ is supposed to be our Life. There are many beautiful homes and lovely neighborhoods but the very best place in the world to live – is in the Will of God. Do not build your life on the level of credit cards, automobiles and houses. Don’t. The physical realm is the lowest level to build your life on – and it is all going away. In the world that’s coming there is a Highway called Holiness, and there will not be a single boat plane car or truck on it. We will travel on it, all of us. And only the Redeemed can travel it. You and I will be there. You’ll be in your glorified body and you’ll like it. It’ll be Good. In just a few days it won’t matter how much money you made, what you owned, or how important you were. All that will matter is . . . do you love Jesus.

Whose Image

In any society there are elements that pressure people to conform, to not rock the boat, to be like everyone else. It’s a lot like the big hydraulic presses and molds used in manufacturing. Continuous pressure is applied to a piece of metal until a car fender or part of a ship is formed. Conformed. The world and its ways shape and form us into something other than the image of God.

We are commanded not to allow that to happen to us as Believers, but to oppose it. Not by being lawless. But by following much higher laws than those of men. Being conformed to the image of Christ by following the Word of God, with the help of the Holy Spirit. No one can make you conform, you must choose to. It might cost your life, but the decision is yours. We choose to conform.

It is up to us what we let form us. The way we choose what we let form us is by choosing what we think on. The Bible says that as a man thinks in his heart is how and what he is. Not in the sense of actuality or attainment – in respect to Judgment. That’s what all things relate to, the coming Judgment. What you said you are compared to what God said you were to be.

This is no mystery, it’s all over the Bible. God has not forgotten and He was not kidding when He said that all people will be Judged. Though there are no doubt many levels to be judged on, the very first level is words. It is our words that will declare our guilt or innocence, and His Word that will Judge us. The Bible says both of these things.

Thoughts are transforming. What are words. Words are thought containers, capsules of thought. Words and thoughts are not mental or physical, they are spiritual. Jesus said my words are spirit and they are life. Your words contain more power more authority in your life than anyone’s. Including God’s. Because your free will is sovereign. God made you that way. Everything that could possibly be done to make sure every man makes it to Heaven has already been done – on God’s part. Each man must choose for himself to enter in, or not.

He will not make you surrender to Him, you must do it of your own free will. God’s thoughts are expressed and revealed in His creation. All of creation came into existence through His words. All the thoughts we have now are replaced with other thoughts. If words contain thoughts and bring these other thoughts to you. Whose words should shape and form the real you, the inside you. The one that will be Judged. The hidden man of the heart. Keep His Word, watch your words.

Love Not The World

The good of mankind is not to be found on this earth. Don’t you listen to the liberals and the secular humanists – all of them hate God! They hate Him. They want nothing to do with His Law, they have no intention of making Jesus their King. They can’t stand the thought of God being the Judge of right and wrong. The very idea of it is an abomination to them.

Since the end of the Victorian era a little over a century ago, all of the new ideologies of psychology, sociology and modern philosophy have bombarded first world society with a never ending barrage of worldliness and carnality. We’ve gone from almost all people going to Church and truly believing in God on some level, to most in the modern age not going to church at all, with some of them kind of believing in God a little.

These modern people are very different than the people who came before them. They are self centered, self promoting and filled with the love of Self foretold in the Scripture for the Last Days, written nearly two thousand years ago. Now we are at the pinnacle of their impact on the thoughts and attitudes of the people, and for the first time – their numbers are in the majority. Churchgoer or not.

They love Babylon, they love Sin, and they love having their own will with what they perceive to be their own life. Pray for them, be a witness – but don’t try to get them to like you. Jesus never did that. Never. He just walked in Love, and many liked it. Some did not. What He always did was to speak the Truth wherever He went.

Those who loved the Truth came in, and those who did not love the Truth stayed out – or opposed Him. If they hated Him, they will hate you. Don’t be troubled by it. If you live for God He promises that He’ll trouble those who trouble you. But it’s never our job to get back at those who’ve hurt us. Even though at times the desire to do so will be overwhelming.

Vengeance belongs to the Lord. That’s His business, and He’ll see to it. You just let His Light in you shine through you. If you’ll just stay filled with the Word and stay in the Spirit, everyday – you’ll do more for God’s Kingdom than most have done in a lifetime of their own best efforts with many resources and much money. Be a light by staying in the Light. God will take care of the rest.

The fruit of my body for the sin of my soul – Micah 6:7 [NASB]

Newtown shooting

In 2006 in Lancaster County Pennsylvania, a non Amish man went into a one room Amish school house and after letting go 15 boys, a pregnant woman, and 3 parents with infants – he shot 10 little girls, killing 5 of them.  The girls were between 6 and 13 years old, he knew none of them, was not angry at them, and he did it in cold blood.  Charles Carl Roberts was a milk-tank truck driver whose father was a retired police officer.  He was 32, married, and the father of 3 children (two boys and a girl).  Like so many of these cowards who want to have their own way then eliminate any possibility of being held accountable – he shot himself.  As the police were breaking into the school house.

Being good Christian folk who live what they believe, the response of the Amish to the family of the murderer within hours was – Forgiveness.  Dozens of the Amish neighbors attended his funeral not even a week after he shot their children, several of those attending were the parents.  What a difference between the people of the world and the people of God.  This was not a “School House Massacre” – that’s modern media terminology.  The school house didn’t do anything.  If it did it should be brought to trial then on to capital punishment.  This “newspeak” as it’s been called distorts and manipulates language in order to sensationalize everything it touches.  By intentionally inflating marketable facts it masks the truth of what’s really going on.  In doing so it deceives us.  All for the purposes of making money from advertising for its media.  News organizations aren’t about Truth, they’re about commerce.

Yes ten little girls were shot, five of them murdered – in their own little school house.  An unthinkable crime.  It’s hard to wrap your mind around it.  But it wasn’t the building, or the car that drove him there – it wasn’t even the gun(s).  It was a man. A man with children of his own, in this case.  The following year it would be a younger Asian man at Virginia Tech.  Earlier this year at a movie theater in Colorado it was a doctoral student with his Master’s in Neuroscience.  This 20 year old who murdered 20 little children today at another school in Connecticut, used 3 guns that were all legal and belonged to his mother.  He killed her too.  The mother didn’t do it, her guns didn’t do it – the young man did it.  And he had broken multiple laws before firing a single shot.  This isn’t a gun problem or a school problem or a theater problem or a Law problem – it’s a people problem.

The problem with people is their internal guidance mechanism.  It’s called Morality.  It comes to us straight from God, men are entirely unable to explain it apart from Him.  Those who even attempt to fail instantly and fail miserably – every time.  Their childish arguments expose a rebellious nature and contempt for authority profoundly lacking in historical knowledge of men and the societies and civilizations they build, then destroy.  They can’t see the forest for the trees, and seem to know little about the trees.

All of the Law and Morality of western civilization come to us straight from the Bible, and nowhere else.  It doesn’t matter what the liberal God hating academia proclaim from the lecterns of 90% of our colleges – they’re the ones who got the Bible and prayer kicked out of school in the ’60’s, and are trying hard to remove it from the rest of society and government.  None of what they have to say matters.  Only what God says matters.  He says you cannot have His Protection if you refuse His Correction, which comes to us through His Word.  Which is another name for the Bible.

Part of the protection He has for us is built into our inner man, it’s called our spirit, and it doesn’t live off of bread.  It lives off of every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.  The Bible is His Book given to us for the express purpose of feeding our spirits.  It has been removed from all the places it was once cherished, and eradicated wherever possible – for decades.  The harvest of all of that is coming in, and it’s going to be a bumper crop.  If you don’t want to be a part of that, then it comes to you as  the highest possible . . . suggested reading.

The Coming Storm

The Bible says if you will separate yourself from Sin, the Devil cannot touch you.  Sin is his territory.  As soon as you sin he has access to you.  If bad things are going on, if trouble has come to a nation or a person, it is because of sin.  There is a reason it happens, but it is not all God.  If good is happening, it is because a person or a nation is keeping themselves from sin. There are always reasons, but they are not always good and they are not all God’s reasons.  The way of the world is sin.  The way of the Lord is holy.  There is no place in existence where what is sin and what is holy dwell together.  Sin is what we do away from God as holy is how we are with God.

Sin separates us from God the same way the Word separates us from sin. The more junk food you feed your soul, the more you defile yourself.  Watching stuff you should not watch, hearing things you should not hear, thinking on and talking about things you should not be.  None of these things add to you they take from you, they defile you.  Defilement dulls you.  God wants you for Himself, and He will not tolerate rivals.  We give ourselves over to too many things and we do it far too easily.  We have allowed our lives to become too complicated.  It is entirely our fault.  Not that we were born this way, but if we decide to stay this way.  God has given us help but He will not make us take the help He has offered.  We must choose.

A part of that help can be called the rules of the road for spirits who live together.  For men are spirits just like the Spirit in whose image we were made.  God is Spirit, and the Bible says so. These rules in our world are called morality.  I will explain what it is by paraphrasing what I’ve learned from a wiser man than myself, C.S. Lewis.  That great teacher of basic Christianity.  Do not be surprised to see Christian preachers and teachers borrow from each other, we all do. Every member of His Body has things which are unique to the body part that it is, as well as things that are common to the whole body.  All of it has been given by Christ, it belongs to Him. No one can claim any peculiar genius or some great talent.  Christ is the source of all goodness in men, including the goodness of morality.  Which is more than just our tendency toward goodness and rightness.  Morality is the sense of ought – what you should do.

Morality then is the knowing in our inner man what the outer man should do regardless of how he feels about it.  It cannot be seen from the outside it is something inside of you.  Remember that our spirit is the seat of our conscience, which is where we inherently know what is right from what is wrong.  God put it there, He made it that way.  All men have it whether they deny it by overriding it, or acknowledge it by yielding to it.  You can choose to live in spiritual darkness or spiritual light.  For our own conscience and morality that comes from it, are something we must yield to.  It is our own moral choices that separate those that love truth from the ones who do not.  God set it up as part of His filtering process.  In the spiritual realm this separation is called holiness.  Holiness is not popular, but it is simple.  Holiness is a decision.  It separates us from the world.  You must decide to separate yourself.  You will need it for what’s coming.

If you are filled with soap operas or football, concern for your investments or frustration with your love life – that is exactly what will come out of you when it all hits the fan. It is a Spiritual Law: what is in you comes out of you.  In good times and bad.  Out of what is stored up in your heart, your mouth will speak.  This is how we are to separate ourselves – in what we Say and what we Do.  The way we live our lives.  Those that will not separate themselves to Him here in this world, will finally be separated from Him there in the next.  Forever.  But you and I can be among those that go with Him.  Meditate on the Word, practice the presence of God, keep your faith strong, stay in the Spirit.  When everyone else is freaking out, you will be in perfect Peace.

Little Child

God is so powerful. You know what else He is – He is kind. He is just as kind as He is powerful. His merciful kindness is great toward me. People fear God’s power because they don’t know His love. To know God we must see these two parts of His nature. The Bible says it like this, behold the goodness and severity of the Lord. God is so good, but He is as hard as nails in regards to Sin. Kindness is an attribute of love, but there is much more to love than that. If we are to live a life fully surrendered to Christ, our definition of love needs correcting.

Until you know and understand that the wrath of God is part of the love of God, you don’t know what the love of God is. You don’t have to experience His wrath, no one does. But every one of us will stand before Him. For Christians it will be the Judgment Seat of Christ. For everyone else it will be the Judgment at the Great White Throne. All of the people who have ever lived on the earth since the world began will face God either as their Judge or their Father. He wants to be your Father. For those who refuse, He will be their Judge. The only way He can be your Father is if you become His little child.

If we had the proper and right fear of God spoken of in the Bible – we would hate sin. Many of us don’t hate it enough, most don’t hate it at all. The complete lack of hatred in our lives for so much sin, belies the respect and reverence due His Name. Let alone the fear and awe we all owe to His Person. The essential thing to understand about sin is that it is a destroyer. It’s not that people have no ideas of how bad and corrupt sin is, they have a bunch of wrong ones. God does love us in the sense that He is giving us time to become lovable. You have to become His child to make this possible, which is accomplished in Christ.

As a child of God in Christ you are His beloved. As a destroyer, sin would destroy His beloved. God must destroy that which would destroy His beloved. That’s how His wrath is part of His love. Any who refuse to become the children of His love get destroyed along with the sin they love. This is not His will for anyone, but it is the position of all who refuse Christ. They’re already on their way. No one has to make a conscious choice to go to Hell, Hell is something you have to opt out of. Going there is automatic. If you don’t accept the payment for sin made by Jesus, then you have to pay for your sin with your self. That’s the payment.

As adults we’ve become hardened and jaded, losing the sensitivity we had as children. Child likeness and Humility are both something we must put on like clothing, if we want to draw near to the Master or be of any use to Him. Jesus said it, and the word used in the Greek refers to a little child. We live in a godless society that has taught us to perceive ourselves as more complicated, more sophisticated – adult integrated personalities. It is a false position. No, if someone tells you it’s complicated – it just means they are confused, and don’t want to admit it because they lack Humility.

Anyone who really Knows something can explain it simply. The main reason the world likes to complicate things is in order to hide things. You can see it in every facet of society. It is a part of the deception of the Last Days. Complicated sophisticated people will not make it to Heaven. They are slow to give thanks because they are too busy – being complicated.  It is nothing but Pride. Let me tell you something about the Truth. The truth is simple. We must endeavor to keep things simple. Little children are very simple.

Pride is the great sin and Humility is the great virtue. All of us must get better at identifying the pride that is our fallen nature. It is the main opposition to becoming like a child. Pride refuses to say I’m sorry, I love you, or even can you help me. It thinks too much of itself. Little children don’t think about themselves, they just are. There is a word for that, it’s called humility. Humility doesn’t mean thinking poorly about yourself. Humility is just reality. That’s all. We must get better at humility, to become like little children. The Spirit will help us, but we have to be willing.

Another thing about pride is that it’s unthankful. It refuses to give thanks. Being thankful irritates pride. One indicator of how humble we are is seen in how thankful we are. It takes some practice but you can get good at it. Discipline yourself to be thankful. Make yourself practice thanking God for even the little things in your life, every single day. I thank God for toilets that flush, I thank Him for my bed, for the food He gives me everyday, for hot showers. No kidding. Everyone in our ministry does it. Being thankful will completely change you. Having a thankful grateful heart pleases God.

You must come to Him like a child, a little child. If you never did, then He won’t be that much of a reality to you. He will seem more like an Idea. Even once you’ve come in you have to stay childlike to draw near Him. Childlikeness is something you have to put on. Just as praise is something you do because you believe His Word . . . not because you feel like it. The absence of Christ here on the earth is not reality, it is the illusion. When Jesus shows up that’s Reality.

Don’t let your flesh reduce your thanksgiving and praise to a thought or a feeling. Feeling thanks is not expressing thanks. When you’re not saying it, there is a reason. You praise what you’re impressed with, everybody does. Everyone is praising something. Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks, that’s Bible. People don’t praise God in public because they don’t praise Him in private. When the Lord shows up nothing will be hidden. What’s in you will come out of you. The more you practice thanking God for every good thing in your life, the easier it will be to become like a little child.

I carry my Praise with me. The way someone might carry a wallet or a set of keys, that’s how I carry my Praise. Even if I’m not always saying it, it is always with me – and I say it a lot. Don’t let this be too simple for you now. It is the World and its ways that want to talk you out of the simplicity of Christ. If you are already a child of the Most High God then you’re going to be with God forever. Eternity is a long time. When you realize how long you’re going to be around, it helps you to relax. Let Him increase, and in His increasing you decrease. You become his little child so He can be your big Father.
